Getting Started with Medicare

Medicare can seem a bit overwhelming at first, but this is a good place to start. We’ll cover the basics so you can feel more confident, then you can dig into the parts that matter most to you. Here's a quick overview:
- You can get your Medicare benefits either directly through the government or from a private insurance company.
- You’ll likely pay a portion of the costs—Medicare isn’t always completely free.
- There are specific times during the year when you can sign up or make changes.
- Prescription drug coverage is only available through private insurers.
- Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans come with a 30-day “free look” period, so you can try one out and get a full refund if you change your mind.
If you're switching plans after open enrollment, don’t cancel your current policy until you’ve received and reviewed your new one.
Important Enrollment Periods
- The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) for Medicare Advantage (MAPD) and Part D (PDP) plans runs from October 15 to December 7.
- If you have a Medicare Supplement plan (like F, G, or N) and you're in good health, you may be able to apply now and potentially save on your premiums.
New to Medicare?
If you're just becoming eligible (Initial Enrollment Period) or qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, you’re in open enrollment—which means you can’t be turned down for coverage or asked any medical questions. Pre-existing conditions are fully covered. (Just keep in mind that plan availability can vary by state.)

Medicare Advantage Information
Medicare Advantage plans (also known as Part C or MA/MA-PD Plans) are offered by private insurance companies and provide your Medicare Part A & B benefits through a managed care plan. You’re still enrolled in Medicare, but these plans may offer added benefits like dental, vision, hearing, wellness programs, and often include prescription drug coverage (Part D) at no extra cost. Many plans can significantly lower your premiums, and some even allow you to see any doctor without a referral. Call us today to see what Medicare Advantage options may be available in your area.
Medigap Information
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) helps cover a lot—but not everything. That’s where Medigap, or Medicare Supplement Insurance, comes in. These plans are designed to help pay some of the out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that Medicare doesn’t cover. Medicare was never meant to be your only line of protection, so having the right supplemental plan can give you greater peace of mind. Now may be the perfect time to review your options and make sure your coverage truly fits your health and financial needs.
